Academic Progression & Procedures
The first component of the qualifying exam, the Second Year Seminar is open to the public and will take place in spring or summer of the second year, but no later. In addition to the student’s research advisor, at least one other Bioinformatics faculty member, chosen by the student, must evaluate the seminar. The evaluation will consist of a one-page written report that addresses the following:
- Command of relevant literature
- Demonstration of analytical thinking
- Evidence of critical thought leading to new conclusions
- Competence in answering questions
Faculty evaluators will meet and agree on whether the student has satisfied the requirements. The reports along with the pass/fail decision will be submitted to the Training and Instruction Committee. In case of disagreement, the Training and Instruction Committee will review the evaluations and make the final decision. The student must receive a pass on the seminar evaluation before taking the oral exam. Both the seminar evaluation and the oral exam must be passed for the student to advance to candidacy.
